Brazil crash out despite dominating
Friday, 29 August 2008 22:10
Brazil had 99% of the posession but they couldn't break through the Portuguese back line to get the all important equaliser and the three-time world champions went crashing out to their Portuguese speaking friends, but bitter rivals Portugal.  Portugal scored the early goal to get in front, which then saw the adoption of a backs to the wall aproach to keep out the samba boys.  Portugal soaked up the pressure for the Brazilians, and played to counter attack, but ended up only being able to clear the ball on most occasions, inviting Brazil to recommence their attack.  Goalkeeper Kleber was instrumental in dictating Brazil's play and it wasn't a lack of chances that kept them out, it was resolute Portuguese defending.  1-0 up with seconds remaining and Brazil were camped in Portugal's territory, looking for the last chance.  It came but a foul by Diogo Santos about 18 metres out left Brazil with 2 seconds remaining and one last shot at goal.  Up stepped Tinho who struck a powerful shot at goal, but it deflected out for a kick in on the left hand side.  Kleber took the kick and Moura turned it into an empty goal!  Brazil had equalised with no time remaining as the buzzer sounded around the hall.  Brazil were jublilant, yet Portugal were protesting and as the referees consulted with the 3rd referee, both teams looking on in suspense... »No goal«, said the Austrian referee.  Portugal celebrated and Brazilian hearts had been broken and tempers flaired as they demanded an explanation.  Was the goal after the buzzer?  No, in fact, Kleber had wrongly taken the kick in, which was in fact Portugal's ball so the goal didn't stand.  After watching amateur video for the replays, it turned out that the correct decision had been made, to the despair of Brazilian players and staff.  Most of the crowd were supporting the Brazilians for their style of play, and many feel they deserved to go through.  But that is what these world championships are about and futsal can be a cruel game, as a few teams have already found out here in Koper.  Portugal will now meet Ukraine for a place in the final.

Serbia top group A
Wednesday, 27 August 2008 14:11

With both teams having qualified, this match was only about deciding who would top the group and who would avoid Slovenia in the quarter final.  Uruguay didn't seem too bother and were more concerned about avoiding picking up suspensions going into the inevitible game versus the hosts.  Within 15 seconds, Serbia rattled the bar after stealing the ball and counter attacking with pace.  It wasn't much longer that Uruguay held out and it was an unfortunate own goal that gave Serbia the lead.  After 10 minutes of the game Uruguay were trailing 4-0, mainly through opportunisitic Serbian efforts.  Serbia tried to test the second choice goalkeeper on occasion and Santiago Perez was unable to keep out some powerful strikes.  Lapse defending and a lack of pressure on the attackers gave Serbia a freedom deep in opposition territory, which allowed them such opportunities to strike at goal.  Uruguay still tried to attack and had some good moves, but nothing that troubled the Serbian defence.  The second half was much more even and Nicolas Pirotto added to his tally in the only real positive for Uruguay.  Serbia will be confident going into the quarter final with a draw that pairs them with either China or Kazakhstan.

Uruguay and Serbia through
Tuesday, 26 August 2008 14:07

Uruguay and Serbia qualified for the quarter finals today with wins over France and Turkey respectively.  Uruguay came from behind once again to defeat France 3-2, while Serbia despatched Turkey 8-2.  The remaining group games will only go to determine who they face in the next round and a first place finish will somewhat ease the path to the semi final.

Turkey and France, who are both very new to futsal, came very close to making the knockout stage and will be proud with their performances and even more happy with the development of the game in their respective home nations.  Turkey didn't have a futsal set up two years ago when they sent a representative to the World University Championship in Poznan and have made great strides in the interim.  France, meanwhile, have been involved with futsal somewhat longer, though they don't have a national squad yet.  Futsal is seeing a rapid growth in popularity there, with Zinedine Zidane taking up the sport for a showcase tournament to raise the profile.

Both sides looked good going forward and had good defences that tested the strong Serbian side, who will be a match for any team in this tournament.  Turkey were 30 seconds away from a victory over Uruguay, while France rattled the bar when they were 3-2 down with seconds remaining.  It shows that despite now going into the bottom half of the championship they could easily have been in the quarter finals.

11th World University Futsal Championship now open
Sunday, 24 August 2008 19:29

The 11th World University Futsal Championship was officially declared open tonight by Dr. Rado Bohinc and Vice-Mayor, Jani Bacic.  The opening ceremony took place in Adria Ankaran holiday resort, where all the teams are staying.  Each team was presented to the audience before the opening speeches commenced.

There was a fantastic atmosphere as all the competitors, officials and volunteers came together for the first time.  All the teams were proudly carrying their national flags and there was a real sense of national pride as each country paraded across the forecourt and lined up facing the stage.  The FISU anthem was played before the evening's entertainment, in the form of a local dance school, who were hip-hop champions of europe.

After the entertainment and closing speeches, teams proceeded to line up for photos on the stage to remember this great occasion.

The formalities are now over and tomorrow sees the big kick off as Brazil take on Czech Republic in the game of the day, while hosts Slovenia open their campaign against Great Britain at 21:00 in the Bonifika Sports Hall.  Ukraine, the final team to arrive, take on Portugal in another mouth watering contest at 16:30.  For full schedule use the links on the left hand menu.

Almost ready for the off
Saturday, 23 August 2008 00:00

As all the final few teams are arriving in Slovenia, the final touches for the 11th World University Futsal Championship are being put in place for the big kick off.  The teams already here convened tonight for the General Technical Meeting chaired by FISU delegate John Warnock with FISU colleagues Pedro Dias and Carlos Magalhaes also present.  Patrik Peroša (Organising Committee), Piotr Kus (Head of Discipline) and Petr Fousek (FIFA) made up the table and the teams were given all the information needed.

The World Championship kicks off on Monday and the teams are taking the opportunity of their early arrival to get some training and finalise some tactics.  Favourites Brazil, who were at a Portuguese training camp for two weeks prior to making the comparitively short trip across Europe, have been wasting no time in maximising their chances.  Brazilian officials are in confident mood, but they know that their opening game against the Czech Republic is one of utmost importance.  The typically flamboyant samba boys will be out to do a job and get their championship off to a flying start.

South American counterparts, Uruguay, who are competing in the World University Futsal Championship for the first time, are unsure what to expect.  Despite Futsal coming from Uruguay, it is Europe that is leading the way (Spain are World and European champions and have the Intercontinental Club champions - Interviu Fadesa).  Uruguay will face futsal newbies France and Turkey, and Serbia, who have arguably the best talent in European Futsal among their ranks.

The conditions of the tournament are excellent and the atmosphere is growing every day here in Ankaran.  It promises to be a very competitive yet good spirited World Championship, and with Russia not entering, there will be a new World University Champion come the end of August.  Who will it be?  Most experts say Brazil, but the likes of Serbia, Portugal and Ukraine will be there or thereabouts.  The overall level of competition is superb and there will be no easy matches for the supposed superpowers of futsal.  Even Great Britain could sneak their way into the quarter finals!

Students Arena
Thursday, 18 October 2007 22:13
The traditional annual Students Arena, largest students fair in Slovenia, concluded today. SUSA was present at the Arena, which took place from October 16 to 18 at the Ljubljana Fair. This year we focused on football and futsal. As Slovenian University Sports Association is participating in the pan-European campaign Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE), together with partner organisations, we prepared a mini tournament in table football/soccer. We invited the first league players from Interblock Ljubljana club to join us and they accepted our invitation. Through this action we stood up against rasism and all types of discrimination, stressing that the focus should be on the game itself. We are committed to continue the campaign in the future as well.
The opportunity at the Arena was also the change to promote the 11th World University Futsal Championship, the International University Sport Federation (FISU), and the announcement of our intention to bid for the 26th Winter Universiade Maribor 2013.

EUC Futsal 2007 finished
Sunday, 29 July 2007 22:09
The 4th European Universities Futsal Championship (EUC Futsal 2007) finished today. The winners became the Dnipropetrovsk State Finance Academy team from Ukraine. Congratulations to the European champions, which we will undoubtedly see next year at the World University Futsal Championship here in Koper. 20 European teams participated at the championship, and even though the weather was hot, the real heat was shown at the games, as they were played on a high level. Several games were either decided in the last minutes, or after the shoot-outs, which increased the pressure. The competitors are returning home; most happy happy with their achievements and results, yet others feeling they might have won if things turned out the other way.

WUC Table Tennis Concluded
Monday, 10 July 2006 22:08
The 16th World University Table-Tennis Championship in Maribor, which took place in Maribor, Slovenia from July 4 to 9, 2006, has successfully concluded. International technical commission and the FISU representatives congratulated Slovenian University Sports Association and our partners for excellent execution of the championship. What is more, they were impressed by the fact that almost the entire championship was run by the target audience group - students. At the championship, the candidature for the Winter Universiade was also announced. SUSA, with full support of the Government, Olympic Committee of Slovenia, all Slovenian Universities, University city of Maribor, national Students organisation, and other partners, announced the bid for the 25th Winter Universiade - Maribor 2011.

EUC Futsal also in Slovenia
Monday, 05 December 2005 22:03
European University Sports Association (EUSA) at its annual General Assembly entrusted the 4th European Universities Futsal Championship (EUC Futsal 2007). The championship will offer us additional opportunity to establish best conditions for the World University Futsal Championship in 2008, with special focus on technical aspect for futsal. Otherwise, we are also organising the 16th World University Table-Tennis Championship in Maribor, Slovenia in 2006.

WUC Futsal attributed to Slovenia
Friday, 27 May 2005 22:22
FISU Executive board awarded SUSA organisation of the 11th World University Futsal Championship (WUC). The decision was taken at the board's meeting in Brussels, where other WUCs for 2008 were awarded. Slovenian representatives - Matjaž Pečovnik, and Patrik Peroša - successfully presented the candidature to the board, which chose Slovenian bid over the ones of Spain and Belgium.
Organising the championship is a great honour for SUSA, and for Slovenia in general. SUSA has successfully organised two European University Championships by now (EUC Basketball in 2002, and EUC Volleyball in 2003), and is organising a European University Beach Volleyball Championship in 2005 (in a month), and World University Table Tennis Championship in 2006.
